OBITUARIES DECEASED — DENIS F. McCARTHY TROY, N.Y. — Denis F. McCarthy, 70, died peacefully Monday, October 19, 2026, at Samaritan Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and best friends. Born in Troy, Denis was the son of the late James “Bicky” McCarthy and Marilyn Maher McCarthy. He attended St. Paul the Apostle for grammar school, Cardinal Farley Military Academy for middle school, and Cranwell Preparatory School for high school. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from St. Michael’s College. An accomplished athlete, he played lacrosse and hockey and continued coaching youth hockey well into his 50s. He continued to work in real estate. He was previously a partner and co-founder of JRDM Corporation and later a partner at Scottish Heights Golf Club & Lodge. He was an avid golfer, music lover, and family man. Denis cherished summering at the family cottage in Ocean Point, Maine, and taking part in activities on the water. Throughout his life, Denis held many titles: son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. But perhaps the title that suited him best was simply friend. He was a friend to everyone. He was the person you called when you needed something because you knew he would be there. He loved driving people wherever they needed to go, helping solve problems, and doing whatever he could to make someone else’s life a little easier. If you needed him, he was there. His legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and countless stories that will be shared for years to come. Denis is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Libby Kelly McCarthy; his children, Brenden McCarthy (Katie Jezik) and Bridget McCarthy (Joe Labisi); his grandson, Nicholas Labisi; his cherished siblings, James A. McCarthy Jr. (the late Nora) and Elizabeth McCarthy-Rasmussen (John); his nieces and nephews, Julia Haley, Alexandra, Deidre, James III, and Jacqueline; and many extended family members and dear friends, especially John Colligan, Jay Ryan, Peter McGuire, and Phil Moore. At the time of his death, Denis was serving his second elected term as president of McCarthy Charities, Inc., a fiduciary role he took very seriously. His responsibilities will be carried out on an interim basis by his dear cousins, Pamela McCarthy and Lucy McCarthy. The family thanks his ER and ICU care team at Samaritan Hospital, especially Shannan, Janelle, Kate, and Eva. CALLING HOURS will be held Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, located at the corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue in Lansingburgh. A MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated Monday, October 26, 2026, at noon at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Avenue, Troy. Interment at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery will be private.
